Introduction

One of my favorite moments in cardmaking is watching embossing powder melt and transform into a glossy, metallic finish. There's something magical about that transformation - it's what drew me to card making in the first place!

If you've been using embossing folders the same way for years, today's post will completely transform how you think about these versatile tools. I'm excited to share three game-changing techniques that will help you create stunning metallic designs with Spellbinder style Iris lattice 3D embossing folders.

Many crafters struggle to get varied looks from their embossing folders, often using them in just one way. You might feel like you're not getting enough value from these supplies, or perhaps you're creating the same look over and over. These techniques will solve those problems by giving you three distinctly different effects from a single folder.

Supplies Needed

Technique 1: The Deboss Gold Method

This first technique creates a stunning inlaid metallic effect by working with the debossed side of your folder. The embossing powder will settle into the recessed areas, creating a beautiful dimensional effect that catches the light in an unusual way.

Step-by-Step Instructions:

  1. Ink up your card panel (I used Saltwater Taffy distress ink)
    • Pro tip: Use a post-it note while blending to avoid fingerprints - oxide inks have pigment that takes time to dry and will show fingerprints if you're not careful
  2. Heat set the ink to dry it faster
  3. Use your anti-static powder tool on the panel to prevent unwanted sticking
  4. Find the raised side of the embossing folder (in this case, the back panel)
  5. Place your colored cardstock face down on the raised side of the folder
  6. Apply Versamark ink to the embossing folder
  7. Run through your die cutting machine
  8. Open the folder - you'll see the impression is debossed (going into the paper)
  9. Place typing paper underneath and apply gold embossing powder
    • Notice how the powder settles into all the grooves!
  10. Heat set the embossing powder

The result is a beautiful debossed design with metallic gold powder melted into the recessed areas. This technique is different from the standard approach where the embossed image stands out from the paper.

Technique 2: The Embossed Highlight Method

This second technique creates a completely different look by highlighting just the raised portions of your design with metallic powder.

Step-by-Step Instructions:

  1. Run your cardstock through the die cut machine with the embossing folder as you normally would (no Versamark applied beforehand)
  2. After embossing, you'll have the design raised on your cardstock
  3. Important: Apply anti-static powder tool to the embossed surface
    • I forgot this step in the video and had some issues with powder sticking where I didn't want it
  4. Gently rub your Versamark ink pad over just the raised areas
    • Be careful not to push down too hard - you don't want to get ink in the recessed areas
  5. Place typing paper underneath and apply gold embossing powder
  6. If powder sticks to unwanted areas, use a small dry paintbrush to carefully brush it away
  7. Heat set the embossing powder

This technique gives you the opposite effect of our first technique - now the raised parts of your design have the beautiful metallic shine!

Technique 3: The Negative Space Shimmer

Our final technique creates yet another unique look by filling in the negative spaces within the embossed design.

Step-by-Step Instructions:

  1. Ink up the front part of the embossing folder panel
  2. Run through the die cutting machine normally
  3. Apply Versamark ink to the middle of the raised design areas
    • This allows us to fill all the little negative spots within the design
  4. Apply embossing powder - it will fill up the negative spaces
  5. If powder sticks to the raised areas, try removing it:
    • For large areas: Use a fluffy brush (though be careful - this might remove too much powder)
    • For smaller areas: Use a fine brush to carefully remove powder from specific spots
  6. Heat set the embossing powder

Troubleshooting Tip: If your heat gun isn't powerful enough (mine quit during filming!), you can use a stronger heat tool but be very careful about the angle. Too direct airflow can blow powder away before it melts.

Troubleshooting Tips

Even experienced crafters encounter challenges! Here are some common issues and how to solve them:

  1. Fingerprints in oxide ink:
    • Use a post-it note or clean piece of paper to protect areas while blending
    • Heat set ink promptly to dry it faster
  2. Powder sticking where it shouldn't:
    • Always use an anti-static powder tool before applying Versamark
    • Keep a fine, dry paintbrush handy for precision cleanup
  3. Heat gun problems:
    • Have a backup heat tool if possible
    • When using a stronger heat tool, hold it at an angle and further away to prevent blowing powder off
  4. Finding the correct side of the embossing folder:
    • The raised side will have the design standing out
    • For the deboss technique, place cardstock on this raised side

Completed Projects

Look at these beautiful finished cards using our embossing techniques! I created these birthday cards using coral pink cardstock with gold accents to showcase the embossing techniques.

For these projects, I paired the embossed backgrounds with:

  • Gold glitter cardstock accents
  • Die-cut sentiment toppers with gold embossing
  • Simple white frames to make the designs pop
  • Small gold embellishments for added dimension

These techniques work wonderfully for birthday cards, but would also be perfect for wedding cards, anniversaries, or any special occasion where you want to add an elegant touch.

Frequently Asked Questions

  1. Which technique is best for beginners? The Embossed Highlight Method (Technique 2) is perfect for beginners since it follows the standard embossing process with just a few additional steps.
  2. Can I use different embossing powders besides gold? Absolutely! Silver, copper, or colored embossing powders all work beautifully with these techniques. Try matching your powder to your cardstock for a coordinated look or create contrast with complementary colors.
  3. How do I know which side of the embossing folder to use? The raised side will have the design standing out from the surface. For the deboss technique (Technique 1), place the cardstock on this raised side. For the other techniques, use the folder normally.
  4. Will this work with other brands of embossing folders? Yes! While I used the Spellbinder Iris lattice design, these techniques will work with most 3D embossing folders. The deeper the pattern, the more dramatic your results will be.
  5. How do I store cards with embossed elements? Place them in protective sleeves or boxes where nothing will press against the embossed surface. For mailing, add a piece of cardstock over the embossed area to prevent flattening during transit.

Loving the look of the negative space method but my favorite is the debossed. Makes my card face smoother and unusual. Thanks for this post!

Thanks for the awesome ways to emboss embossing folders!
Just a hint for you. When you use the strong heat gun, heat the bottom side until it starts to melt – adhere to the paper then you can heat from the top to finish up. This keeps from blowing off the embossing powder.
